Tips for getting just the right colour for your home exterior
Updating the exterior of your home can be an overwhelming task. It’s a big undertaking that will likely define your home for the next ten or more years. At Panache Painting and Decorating we understand just how daunting this can be, so let us take some of the stress out by suggesting three key questions to answer in making a decision on your colour palette.
What is the style of your home?
The architectural style and the era of your home will mean your house will have particular details that look fantastic when painted just the right colour. Federation homes traditionally use a colour scheme of deep reds, golds and warm creams which are used to highlight some of the intricate detailing which is a feature of this style. Victorian homes can have wrap-around porches with intricate railings and the right colours can offer a chance to show these off. In Victorian homes deeper colours are traditionally used to highlight, rather than lighter shades.
What is the neighbourhood like?
Even before you start flicking through design magazines or grabbing a handful of paint swatches, we would recommend you take a good look around your area. Neighbourhoods, like architectural designs, have colour palettes which are in keeping with the look and feel of the area. In newer areas, with modern design for example, you often find houses using very similar colours such as off whites and neutrals with natural browns, greys or a deep purple highlights to offer contrast.
What is the setting?
Are you in an urban, coastal or bushland setting? Look at the colour palette which already exists in the setting of your home and consider how you can anchor your home in its environment. Beach houses for example, are often painted in blues and greys which reflect their coastal surrounds.
At the end of the day, remember it’s your house you are painting. Sure, ask the right questions when selecting your exterior palette, but also consider what you personally like. If you want to make a bold statement, or incorporate bright colours into your exterior, go for it. Just don’t go overboard, and perhaps choose a spot that is easily accessible to repaint, should you change your mind.
